Integrative Approaches

Safe and Sound Protocol to be used in conjunction with other mental health or occupational therapies.

Integrative Approaches for Regulation and Connection

At Breathing Through, we understand that growth and healing begin with a regulated nervous system. To support this foundation, we incorporate integrative, evidence-based approaches that work alongside Play Therapy to strengthen emotional balance, attention, and overall well-being.

Tools such as the Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) and the iLS Listening System are designed to gently support the brain and body in finding calm, focus, and connection. These approaches use sound, rhythm, and sensory input to help regulate the nervous system, reduce stress responses, and enhance engagement in daily life and therapy.

By combining these integrative methods with the relational and experiential nature of Play Therapy, we help clients build resilience from the inside out—supporting the mind, body, and emotions in working together toward lasting change.

Safe & Sound Protocol

Breathing Through Counseling & Wellness Services is proud to offer the Safe & Sound Protocol (SSP) — an evidence-based auditory intervention developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, founder of the Polyvagal Theory. This gentle, sound-based approach supports nervous system regulation and emotional balance by using specially filtered music to stimulate the vagus nerve and middle ear muscles, helping the body shift from a state of stress to one of calm and connection.

The SSP has been shown to reduce stress and auditory sensitivity while enhancing social engagement, attention, and emotional resilience. Research indicates that it can be especially beneficial for individuals managing anxiety, ADHD, trauma, depression, and autism spectrum challenges.

The SSP is delivered through listening sessions—either in-person or remotely—tailored to meet each client’s unique nervous system needs. Sessions are typically offered over several days, allowing the body to gradually integrate the calming effects of the protocol. For children, sessions include engaging, play-based activities; for adolescents and adults, sessions focus on relaxation and self-regulation.

Because the SSP works at the foundation of the nervous system, it is most effective when used in conjunction with ongoing therapeutic support, such as Play Therapy or counseling.

iLs Listening System

The iLs (Integrated Listening System) is a gentle, neuroscience-based approach designed to support attention, coordination, emotional regulation, and overall nervous system balance. Using specially modified music, bone conduction, and movement activities, iLs helps strengthen the communication pathways between the brain and body—supporting how we process information, stay organized, and respond to the world around us.

At Breathing Through Counseling & Wellness Services, the iLs system is often used to complement Play Therapy and counseling sessions, helping clients increase focus, reduce anxiety, and improve self-regulation. For children, the iLs experience can be integrated into play-based activities, while adolescents and adults may use it during relaxation or mindfulness work.

By pairing movement, sound, and regulation, the iLs Listening System promotes whole-brain integration—allowing clients to feel more grounded, connected, and capable of managing life’s daily demands. This approach is individualized for each person’s needs and can be used alongside traditional therapy to enhance overall therapeutic progress.
